Today people have a lot of information but very little attention. It’s just as you suspected; the information age has changed the general attention span. A recently published study from researchers at the Technical University of Denmark suggests the collective global attention span is narrowing due to the amount of information that is presented to the public. Released in the scientific journal Nature Communications, the study shows people now have more things to focus on – but often focus on things for short periods of time.

Content is increasing in volume, which exhausts our attention and our urge for ‘newness’ causes us to collectively switch between topics more regularly,” said Philipp Lorenz-Spreen of Max Planck Institute for Human Development that also participated in the study.

It’s not unusual to find your mind wandering when you should be focused on something. According to a 2010 study, we spend nearly 47 percent of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we are doing.

A short attention span can have several negative effects, including:

  • poor performance at work or school
  • inability to complete daily tasks
  • missing important details or information
  • communication difficulties in relationships
  • poor health related to neglect and inability to practice healthy habits
  • According to Ayurveda Sattvavajay low attention span is symptom of Rajo vruddhi, domination of Rajogun.

Attention training is invariable part of Sattvavajay therapy. Sattva will get improved by this practice. Paying attention to attention is very important part of this therapy. Whenever we notice that our attention is not in present moment and mind is unncessory wandering in past or future, we can practice to shift it to present moment.

Charakacharya described that atiyog of chintan (continues thinking) is one cause of psychological stress. We can change this pattern by practicing two minutes breath awareness break in every hour while doing brain work. It will give rest to default mode network in brain and will improve attention.

This network means different parts of brain remains active when we have thoughts in mind. Modern research shows that hyperactivity of DMN can cause anxiety, OCD and depression.

The answer? work on the information for fifty eight minutes in an hour but spare two minutes to pay attention on your natural breath.

It is easy to say but difficult to practice. Thats why we have created android app with attention training audio. If you can spare daily ten minutes to practice it, the attention center in your brain will be more active. Then it is easier to pay attention to attention in whole day. Try it.

As we have more distractions in modern age spreading awareness about Sattvavajay and attention training is the need of the hour.
