Emotions in the brain

Many neuroscientists are working on emotions in the brain, Dr. Lisa Barrett is one of the leading researchers. According to her, our brain works on many files at a time. The brain collects information by five sense organs to know and interpret the surroundings. It is collecting and analyzing information from body also. At the same time, it is also working on past memory and future possibilities.

All these files are active at the same time, but we are not aware of them. What we are aware about is our conscious mind; in that sense, it would be fair to say that the unconscious mind is much larger than the conscious mind. The brain files work like ten person working in one room. Every file is analyzing the information, this process is called cognition. That is where thoughts originate and pop up in mind.

Our mind is always distracted because different files get prominent and different thoughts pop up in mind . Then what is emotion? When one of the ten person working in single room thinks, ‘What I understand is very important and needs to be taken into account by all,’ he starts to cry out loud.

The same thing happens in the brain. One of the many files that were active at a time become and remain prominent. That is what we call emotion. At that time, all other files are slowed down Therefore, when we have fear, or anger, thoughts about that incidence are generated in a very large and rapid way, there is no sense of other things. This is the reason why we act impulsively when any emotion is too intense. The main goal of Sattvavajay therapy is to reduce impulsive behavior due to intense emotions.
